History of Diving Museum

One of our stops on our trip to Islamorada included the History of Diving Museum.  Not just a museum for people who are into diving, this place was way cooler than I thought it would be.  It was unique, educational and fun.

From the moment you come in to the parking lot, you are greeted with historic relics and a mural painting on the building which is breathtaking.  As you can see above, they have a real cannon that was salvaged in the 1950s and is from a shipwreck that occurred in 1695.  The beautiful painting on the wall is by Guy Harvey, a famous marine wildlife artist and conservationist.

After paying the entrance fee, our first stop was the library.  This was a cool room with a video that you can watch giving you some history lessons in diving.  They have over 2500 books, prints and pictures on the history of diving and cool artifacts all around.  Students can actually use these materials for research in their studies.  We enjoyed ourselves making pretend we were giving a lecture and sailing through rough seas.

It was incredible to see all the cool exhibits they had throughout, too many to name here.  They even had a few exhibits that you could interact with, which is always super cool!  The owner, Sally Bauer, was there on the day we went and was really informative and friendly with us.  We had the best time and recommend checking this museum out if you are ever in Islamorada.  It’s worth going whether you’re into diving or not!

Check out their website and make plans on going to this great museum!
